Diving Section

Sponsored by Ocean Acoustics Developments Ltd.

Welcome to the Diving Section of the Tornadoes of South Dorset SC. We compete as individuals as members of TTSD, however, we represent the club at inter-club and county competitions as the Boscawen Dive Team. The Club Committee hope you will find this folder helpful in understanding some of the teaching techniques and expressions used in diving.

The divers meet at the Osprey Leisure Centre (formerly called the Boscawen Sports Centre) on Portland. The session time is Saturday 4.30 to 5.30 pm

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the session to allow time for stretching/flexibility and warm up. Swimmers must not enter the water until a coach and lifeguard are present with them on the poolside. We also have made use of the Wessex DC at Poole courtesy of Wessex DC Chief Coach, where there is a 3m spring and a 5m firm board.

History

The Diving Team was formed in April 2002 as a spring board and highboard teaching group as part of the Tornadoes of South Dorset SC. Originally it was to teach and coach diving skills to the younger members of the club being an extension of the Club Night programme. The popularity was enhanced with “development training camps” and thus swimmers from other ASA affiliated clubs were encouraged to join the training sessions.

Note. A diving and plunging competition was held in 1996 at the Thornlow School Pool sponsored by Boeder UK Ltd. Thus the ASA Badges (Diving Skills) was a recurring feature of the TTSD (formerly TT) Club Night programme on Saturday evenings.

The Centre has hosted the Novice Western Counties Diving Competition in 2001and the Diving Section was formed as the Boscawen Dive Team (comprising swimmers from TTSD and Weymouth SCs), which in 2002 gained a gold medal in the boys 13/14 years and a silver medal in the girls under 12 years competitions.

Note. The Novice Competition has been renamed Skills Competition and we are now in the ASA South West Region not Western Counties. The SW Region comprises Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucester, Somerset and Wiltshire.

In 2005 a team of three swimmers were entered in the Dorset County ASA Diving Championships at Poole. The results were one gold medal (boys 13/14) one silver and one bronze medal (both in girls Under 12).

In 2006 the team increased to eight swimmers gaining three gold medals, four silver medals and one bronze medal, thus Girls Under 12 novice – gold, silver and bronze,

Boys Under 12 novice – silver,

Boys 13/14 novice – gold, and

Boys 15/16 age group – silver.

In 2007 the team entered 15 swimmers (11 from TTSD, 2 from Weymouth SC and 1 each from West Dorset Warriors SC and Bere Regis SC), medal tally thus

Boys 12/15 novice – gold, silver and bronze,

Boys 12/15 age group – bronze.

In 2008 the team again entered 15 swimmers all from TTSD, medal tally:

Skills Competition Boys 8/11 Silver, Boys 12/16 bronze, Girls 12/16 gold,

Championship Girls 12/16 silver, Girls springboard bronze.

In 2008 the Dive Team were sponsored by the Ocean Acoustic Developments Ltd., and thanks to this sponsorship the new medals and trophies have been purchased, thus Hodgson Cups for Junior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys.
